Basketball – Become a Better Three-Point Shooter

To become a better shooter it’s mandatory that you get close to the   basket  and practice a lot. Good shots are based upon rhythm and form.

Take hundreds and even thousands of shots within twelve feet of the  basket . The purpose for this is to actually ingrain it in your brain that when you’re close to the hoop you can make the shot with a consistent level of success.

It really doesn’t matter which drills you do or how you practice it. What matters is the result of your first thrust and how the ball is released from your hands. As your rhythm changes or your form begins to change, that’s the limit of your range. Practice by taking a hundred shots.

Once it feels like your shots are automated again, begin to move back till you reach the limit of your range. When you’re beginning to make more shots from behind the three-point line, then you can resume your practice drills until you’re more proficient and have your confidence back.

Players struggle from behind the arc because they should change their shot to get the ball to the  basket . Don’t let the distance between you and the  basket  psyche you out. Focus on the  basket , aim as if you’re within twelve feet, and then shoot.

But, if you only have an hour to practice, what should you work on?

To make efficient use of your time, and so that you don’t have to keep looking at the clock, bring some music with you and work out for a specific number of songs. Or, bring along anything that will help you keep track of the time.

Then, establish for yourself if you’re going to work on weaknesses or shore up your strengths. Regardless of which you choose, each practice workout should include shot repetitions and ball handling.

Stretch your comfort level and do not fret about losing the ball. Move on to shooting and do drills which will get you a large volume of shots. Rebounds may help your conditioning, along with shooting near the  basket . After you have that done, work with some combo drills that let you work on many shooting and ball-handling techniques that are combined

For example, you could set up a row of chairs and dribble around them or over them. Then pull up for a jump shot. Remember, in 60 minutes, you cannot work on everything. Pick one or two things in addition to ball handling. Work on one strength and one weakness. Then put those practice sessions into a daily or weekly planned agenda to improve your game.
